How to Shut Off Your Water (and Gas) in an Emergency

The first few minutes matter most. Here’s where to find each shutoff and how to use it. If you’re stuck, call and we’ll walk you through it on the phone.

hose bibMain shutoffwater line from street

Main water shutoff

This stops water to the whole house. Use it for burst pipes, big leaks or water coming through a wall or ceiling.

  1. In many Orange County homes, it’s on the outside wall where the water line enters, often near a front hose bib or in the garage.
  2. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops. A lever-style valve turns a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe.
  3. If you can’t find it or it won’t turn, the water meter box near the curb also has a shutoff, but it usually needs a meter key. Call us and we’ll walk you through it.

Don’t force a stuck valve with a long wrench. Old valves can break and make the leak worse.

Cold-water valvehot outcold ingas / power

Water heater shutoff

Use this if the water heater is leaking or the pressure relief valve keeps discharging.

  1. Find the cold-water pipe going into the top of the tank and turn its valve clockwise.
  2. For a gas heater, turn the gas control knob to “Off” or “Pilot.” For an electric heater, switch off its breaker.
  3. Keep people away from hot water on the floor, then call us.

The water inside can be scalding. Don’t try to drain the tank yourself during an emergency.

Turn clockwise

Toilet and sink shutoffs

For an overflowing toilet or a leak under one sink, you can usually shut off just that fixture.

  1. Behind the toilet, near the floor, there’s a small oval handle. Turn it clockwise.
  2. Under sinks, there are two valves, one hot and one cold. Turn both clockwise.
  3. Lift the toilet tank lid and raise the float to stop the toilet filling while you turn the valve.

If these small valves are stuck or leak when turned, use the main shutoff instead.

Quarter turnonly if you smell gas and it’s safe

Gas meter shutoff

Only if you smell gas, hear gas escaping or see damage, and only if it’s safe to do it.

  1. Leave the building first. Don’t use light switches, phones or anything that could spark inside.
  2. From outside, call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200. Call 911 if anyone could be hurt.
  3. If it’s safe and you know how, a quarter turn of the valve on the pipe into the meter, so the tab sits across the pipe, shuts off the gas.

Once the gas is off, only SoCalGas or a qualified professional should turn it back on.

Illustrations are simplified. Valve locations vary from home to home.

FAQ

Emergency Plumbing Questions, Answered

Do you really answer 24/7?

Yes. Call (714) 274-3041 any time, day or night, including weekends and holidays. After hours, you’ll speak with Andy, the owner of Lay It Rite Plumbing, not an answering service.

How much does an emergency plumber cost in Orange County?

It depends on the time and the problem. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., there’s no service call fee, even for urgent problems. For evenings, weekends and holidays, we tell you our after-hours rate on the phone before anyone is dispatched. Common repairs like clogs start at $120, and main-line cleaning starts at $325 with a camera inspection included.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Call right away for a burst pipe or a leak you can’t stop, sewage backing up into the house, water coming through a ceiling or wall, a leaking water heater tank, no water to the whole house, or a restaurant drain backing up during service. A single clogged toilet when another works, a dripping faucet or no hot water without a leak can usually wait until morning.

How do I shut off my water in an emergency?

Use the main water shutoff. In many Orange County homes it’s on the outside wall where the water line enters, often near a front hose bib or in the garage. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If you can’t find it, call us and we’ll walk you through it.

How fast can you get to me?

It depends on where you are and the time of day. We dispatch from Huntington Beach and will give you an honest arrival estimate when you call. While we’re on the way, we’ll help you stop the damage over the phone.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the building right away and don’t use light switches or anything that could cause a spark. From a safe place outside, call SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200, or call 911 if anyone could be in danger.

What should I do if sewage is backing up?

Stop using all water in the house: no flushing, showers, dishwashers or laundry. Keep children and pets away from the area, and call us. A main-line blockage usually needs to be cleared with a cable machine or hydro jetting.

My water heater is leaking. Is that an emergency?

A leak from the tank itself usually means it’s failing, so treat it as urgent. Turn off the cold-water valve on top of the heater, set a gas heater to “Off” or switch off the breaker for an electric one, and call us.

Do you handle emergencies for restaurants and businesses?

Yes. Restaurants are some of our most regular customers. We respond 24/7 to grease line and floor drain backups and can set up regular hydro jetting to help prevent them.

Which cities do you cover for emergency plumbing?

We cover 27 Orange County cities, including Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, Westminster, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Irvine, Tustin, Orange, Anaheim, Laguna Beach, Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point.
