What Is Your Drain Telling You?

Pick what you’re seeing. We’ll tell you the likely cause, how urgent it is and what to do right now, before you call anyone.

Usually not urgent

One sink, tub or toilet is slow or clogged

Likely cause
A clog in that one fixture’s drain line, often hair and soap in bathrooms or grease and food in kitchen sinks.
What to do now
Try a plunger, and pull hair out of the tub or sink stopper. Skip chemical drain cleaners.
What it usually takes
A fixture drain cleaning, from $120 on weekdays.

Several drains are slow or backing up at the same time

Likely cause
A blockage in your main sewer line. Common causes in Orange County are tree roots, grease buildup, scale in older pipes and sagging sections of line.
What to do now
Stop running water, laundry and dishwashers until the line is cleared, or you may get sewage backing up into the lowest drain.
What it usually takes
A main-line cleaning, from $325, with a camera inspection and emailed video included.

The toilet gurgles when a sink drains or the washer runs

Likely cause
Air being pushed through a partly blocked main line, or sometimes a vent problem. It is often the early warning before a full backup.
What to do now
Keep an eye on the lowest drains in the house. If water starts rising in a tub or shower, treat it as urgent.
What it usually takes
Usually a main-line cleaning with a camera inspection to find the cause.

Water comes up in the tub or shower when you flush

Likely cause
The main sewer line is blocked, so wastewater is backing up into the lowest drain in the house.
What to do now
Stop using water right away, including toilets, showers and the washer. Keep kids and pets away from the backed-up water.
What it usually takes
An urgent main-line cleaning. We answer 24/7, and after-hours rates are quoted on the phone before we dispatch.

Sewer smell indoors or in the yard

Likely cause
A dried-out trap in a rarely used drain, a vent issue, or a damaged or blocked sewer line.
What to do now
Run water into unused drains for a minute to refill the trap. If the smell comes back or there are damp spots in the yard, have the line inspected.
What it usually takes
A camera inspection to find the source. It’s included with a main-line cleaning, or call for a quote on its own.

Restaurant drains or floor drains backing up

Likely cause
Grease and food solids building up inside kitchen and floor drain lines. It usually gets worse until the line is jetted.
What to do now
Avoid pouring grease or hot water down to “flush” the line. It moves the grease further down, where it hardens.
What it usually takes
Hydro jetting of the grease line, with lower pricing on a 6- or 12-month schedule. Call for a quote.

How we clear drains

See It, Clear It, Prove It

Most companies clear the clog and leave. We show you what was in the pipe and what it looks like after.

STEP 1

Find

We ask what you’re seeing, then locate the clog. On main lines we run a camera to see the cause before we clear it.

STEP 2

Clear

We use the right tool for the job: a cable machine for most clogs, hydro jetting for grease, scale and roots.

STEP 3

Show

We run the camera again on main lines and email you the video, so you can see the line is clear.

STEP 4

Prevent

We explain what caused it and what will help keep it from coming back, in plain language.

You get the video, not just our word for it

On every main-line cleaning, we record the camera inspection and email you the video. You can see roots, grease or damage for yourself, keep it for your records, or share it with your landlord, HOA or property manager.

What Drain Cleaning Costs

Drain Snaking vs. Hydro Jetting

Hydro jetting is the bigger job and the bigger bill. Here’s how we decide which one you actually need.

How drain snaking worksIllustration of a pipe cutaway: a rotating cable with a cutting head bores a hole through a clog, while grease and scale stay coated on the pipe walls.Cable bores a hole through the clogGrease and scale stay on the walls
Most clogs

Cable snaking

A rotating cable cuts through the blockage and opens the line.

  • Sink, tub, shower and toilet clogs
  • First-time main-line clogs
  • Fast and the lower-cost option
  • Opens the line but doesn’t scour the pipe walls
How hydro jetting worksIllustration of a pipe cutaway: a jetting nozzle sprays high-pressure water backward against the full pipe wall, leaving the pipe clean behind it, while buildup ahead of the nozzle has not been cleaned yet.Water scrubs the whole pipe wallPipe left clean, wall to wall
Recurring or heavy buildup

Hydro jetting

High-pressure water scrubs the full width of the pipe, not just a hole through the clog.

  • Grease lines in kitchens and restaurants
  • Tree roots and heavy scale
  • Lines that keep clogging after snaking
  • Camera inspection first to check the pipe is in good enough shape

Looking down the pipe

CloggedGrease and scale have nearly closed the pipe.
After snakingWater flows again, but the walls are still coated.
After hydro jettingThe full width of the pipe is open and clean.

Illustrations simplified for clarity.

Our promise on this: if a cable will fix it, we’ll tell you. We recommend hydro jetting when the camera shows you need it, and you’ll see the same footage we do.

What You Can Safely Try First

Some clogs you can clear yourself. Here’s what we’d tell a friend, and what to avoid.

Worth a try

  1. Use a cup plunger on sinks and tubs, and a flange plunger on toilets. Cover the overflow hole on tubs and bathroom sinks first.
  2. Pull hair out of tub and shower stoppers. It’s the most common bathroom clog.
  3. For a slow kitchen sink, check whether the garbage disposal is jammed and reset it.
  4. Refill dry traps in rarely used drains by running water for a minute if you notice a sewer smell.

Please don’t

  • Pour chemical drain cleaners down the drain. They can damage older pipes and often leave the clog in place.
  • Keep flushing or running water when several drains are backing up. That points to the main line.
  • Pour grease, coffee grounds or “flushable” wipes down drains. They cause most kitchen and main-line clogs.
  • Rent a heavy sewer machine without experience. A cable can kink or get stuck in the line.

FAQ

Drain Cleaning Questions, Answered

How much does drain cleaning cost in Orange County?

At Lay It Rite Plumbing, weekday drain cleaning starts at $120 for a sink, tub or toilet clog, $325 for a main sewer line cleaning with a camera inspection included, and $595 for residential hydro jetting. Standalone camera inspections and restaurant grease line jetting are quoted by phone. The exact price depends on access and the length of the line, and you get it before any work begins.

Do you charge a service call fee for drain cleaning?

No service call fee for visits Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. For evenings, weekends and emergencies, we tell you the after-hours rate on the phone before anyone is dispatched.

Do I get to see the camera footage?

Yes. On every main-line cleaning, we run a camera inspection and email you the video, so you can see what caused the clog and that the line is clear.

Should I get my drain snaked or hydro jetted?

Most single-fixture clogs and first-time main-line clogs only need a cable machine. Hydro jetting is worth it for grease lines, tree roots, heavy scale or lines that keep clogging after snaking. We camera-inspect first and recommend jetting only when the footage shows you need it.

Is hydro jetting safe for my pipes?

For pipes in reasonable condition, yes. We camera-inspect the line before jetting. If a pipe is badly cracked, collapsed or broken, jetting isn’t the right fix, and we’ll show you the footage and talk through repair options instead.

Why do my drains keep clogging?

Recurring clogs usually mean the cause is still in the pipe: grease coating the walls, tree roots growing into joints, scale from Orange County’s hard water, or a sagging section of line. A camera inspection shows which one it is, so the fix lasts.

How often should a restaurant have its grease lines jetted?

Many restaurants schedule hydro jetting every 6 to 12 months, depending on cooking volume and how much grease goes down the drains. We can set up a regular schedule at a lower price per visit.

Can you clear a clogged drain at night or on the weekend?

Yes. We answer 24/7, and after hours you’ll speak with Andy, the owner. Call (714) 274-3041. We’ll quote the after-hours rate before we dispatch.

Are chemical drain cleaners bad for pipes?

They can be. Harsh chemical drain cleaners can damage older metal pipes and some plastic fittings, and they often leave the real clog further down the line. A plunger or a professional cleaning is the safer choice.

Do you clear drains in my city?

We’re based in Huntington Beach and serve 24 Orange County cities, including Seal Beach, Westminster, Fountain Valley, Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Irvine, Tustin, Orange, Anaheim, Laguna Beach, Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point.
